Procida’s Good Friday procession.

An island with volcanic origins, Ischia offers an exquisite blend of verdant mountain slopes, turquoise sea, thermal spas, and fishing villages. Around every corner, there’s a varied landscape to discover, from bubbling hot thermal springs to steeply sloped vineyards and historic castles. Though this island is not on every day-tripper’s radar, Ischia is an oasis that is ideal for a relaxing holiday surrounded by nature.

Called the Isola Verde (Green Island), Ischia centers around Monte Epomeo, which soars to 2,589 feet (789 m) and is largely covered by thick vegetation and forests. Although its volcanic history has made the island incredibly lush, its name is thought to refer to the unusual green-hued tufa stone that is found on Ischia, especially on the southern side of the island.

Spilling down the slopes to the rugged coastline, the island’s towns have a rich history to discover, dating back to early Greek settlers. Yet, while the island’s natural beauty and quaint villages are alluring, what has attracted visitors to the island since ancient times is the abundance of thermal springs dotted around the island. Known for their healing properties for over 2,000 years, more than 100 springs and hydrothermal basins offer a variety of temperatures and chemical properties. Whether you’re looking for pure relaxation or therapeutic treatments, Ischia’s spas are good for the body and soul.

A short ferry ride from Ischia is the smallest of the Phlegraean Islands in the Gulf of Naples, Procida, which can easily be explored on a day trip from Ischia or Naples. However, there’s a relaxed allure to Procida that begs a longer visit if your travels allow. Stay and meander through the medieval Terra Murata village at the island’s highest point, enjoy leisurely lunches among the pastel-hued buildings and fishing boats of Marina Corricella, and experience your own Il Postino movie moments biking around the island’s residential streets.
